Pawing Around with BOB – September Island Batik Challenge

As a child I have fond memories of playing around with blocks. It was so fun to take these simple shapes and create all kinds of structures and unique designs. This month’s Island Batik Challenge, we were to let the child inside come out and play again. The Child’s Play Challenge brought back these wonderful memories. My challenge was to use the AccuQuilt Bear Paw BOB (Block on Board) and create a fun quilt for a child. I did some “pawing” around with the shapes using Electric Quilt EQ8 software. Using the AccuQuilt Bear Paw BOB I designed a fun, modern, graphic, quilt any child would love to cuddle with. Meet “Pawing Around”.

Pawing Around with BOB

The Island Batik fabrics I used:

  • Lavender – Basics
  • Jelly – Basics
  • Wisteria
  • Dandelion – BE22-A1
  • Grey – Basics
  • Fern Leaves – 111930740

Our challenge sponsor, AccuQuilt provided the Bear Paw block on board (BOB) GO! cutting die. All the shapes were on the die. I just arranged them in another way to make “Pawing Around”.

I cut strips and fan folded then over the shapes I needed. In a matter if minutes I had cut hundreds of half square triangles (HSTs), rectangles, and squares. It was so easy to sew them together, since GO! has removed the “bunny ears” from the HSTs and all the shapes fit together perfectly.

The GO! BOB made this quilt so fast to make and it was cut with accuracy. Each strip set was placed on the shape I needed. I fan folded the fabric strips to cut 6 at a time which make the cutting a breeze.

After all my shapes were cut, it was simple to sew them together. I made 6 inch blocks with the cut units. The blocks were arranged in a diagonal pattern in rows and then sewn together with 50wt. Aurifil thread.

Pawing Around was quilted using an allover orange peel design. Hobbs Premium 80/20 Cotton Batting was used to give the quilt lots of durability to stand up to many washing. This quilt is to be used, so only the best batting and thread was selected to stand up to the love it will be given by a child.

Give one of AccuQuilt’s many BOBs a try. The BOBs are fun to use. If you need to make a quilt fast and have it be cut accurately, then AccuQuilt has the cutting die.
